Them/ Idea, "The ideas of a story. Centres on, Message we are trying to convey to the audience"

-

Tolerance, "The quality of allowing other people to have their own attitudes, beliefs, or to behave in a particular, even if you don't agree or approve"

Tolerance, The ability to put up with others beliefs attitude and culture even when you don't agree/ its different from your own.

-

Overcoming Adversary, "Pushing past/ getting through something difficult or dangerous"

Overcoming Adversary, Pushing through something difficult or dangerous.

-

The students don't respect or have a relationship with their teacher. They don't understand each other. They aren't in a headspace to learn because they don't feel safe - They bring guns to school, Racist images / mocking each other, and they have no tolerance for one another. They treat the teacher like trash yelling at her; they don't face her. "why should I give you my respect? Because you're a teacher? I don't know you, how do I know you're not a bad person standing up there" Andre says " Lady I'm lucky if I even make it to 18 we in a war! We graduating every day we live because we ain't afraid to die protecting our own" Marcuse says.

-

Deep Focus, Everything in the image is sharp and clear

-

Shallow focus, Focuses us on part an image blurs the rest tells the viewers where their attention is needed

-

EVA, She saw her brother shot for just reaching into his pocket, her dad was innocent but taken away, She's shot at and beat up for just walking to school.

BEN, He feels dumb he's the only white person he's a misfit.

MARCUSE, He saw his best friend shoot himself the first night in juvie he cried himself to sleep he was kicked out of home and lives the gang life.

ANDRE, His brothers in jail his mum hates him because he looks like his dad his mother thinks he going to

end up like his brother

-

In the Holocaust scene, the shallow focus is used to show the theme of tolerance. For instance, we see a picture been passed around the room until it reached Jamel. The picture is a stereotype of an African American with big lips and has Jamel's name on it when he receives it, Jamall puts his had bak on and shrinks into his chair. shallow focus is used to bring our attention to the note/ picture and it has an effect on Jamel. This makes us understand that the picture used to bully and embarrass Jamall. The director did this to help us empathize with the characters and gain an insight into what their lives are like. coinciding with this is the use of costume in this case Jamalls hat. when Jamel puts the hat on it symbolizes that he doesn't want to be seen. This scene introduces the viewer to the theme of tolerance because we can see that currently the students do not respect other's cultures and believes or identities this makes students like Jamall feel unsafe in class.

-

Angles-High? low shows/ power Lighting-dim/ bright shows emotion e.g Jamal overwhelmed close up/mid-shot-teacher in mid-shot student close up we feel the distance between the student and the teacher, the gap in understanding.

Close-ups are utilized to empathize with the students in the holocaust scene. We see Eva yelling at the teacher "I hate white people, I hate white people I saw white cops shoot my friend in the back for reaching in his pocket, I saw white cops break into my house and take my father for no reason except cause they feel like it and because they can and they can cause there white I HATE WHITE PEOPLE ON SITE!!" The close-up shot was employed successfully and effectively allowed us to have an inside look at Eva's past and empathize with her. coinciding with the use of Lighting it introduces us to a quite intense scene but the use of shadowing allows us to empathizes and helps us make a connection with Eva, and alternatively lets us feel what Eva feels. This Scene introduced the viewer to the theme of tolerance and overcoming adversity, She doesn't let her past put her down and Eva stands up for what she believes in.

In the I'm at Home scene, close-ups are used to Empathise with the learner. We observe NAME reading from his notebook. The close-up was utilised to Empathise and sympathise with the character. He relates a tragic narrative about his history. This shot lets us identify with him and have a deeper knowledge of him. The focus was blurred due to the dark lighting (Shellow focus) We pay emphasis to NAME since he had a difficult history but is happier now. The scene depicts overcoming hardship because he has come from bad circumstances and she helped him feel at home/ joyful.
